- 解釈：武士が轡（馬の口に含ませる具）の音に敏感に目を覚ますという意から、油断のないたとえ。転じて身に付いた嗜み（たしなみ）のことをいう。
- Literal：I wake to the sound of the bit.
- Interpretation：Like the smith's dog, that sleeps at the noise of the hammer, but wakes at the crashing of teeth. It is never inattentive. He mastered the custom.
- 類義：居候（いそうろう）は茶碗の音にも目を覚ます。心掛けある武士は、地を這う虫にも気を許さず。侍の子は轡の音で目を覚まし、商人（あきんど）の子は算盤の音で目を覚まし、乞食の子は茶碗の音で目を覚ます。
